Resident participation will lead to a more accurate population count and additional revenue
Naperville will conduct a partial special census beginning Friday, February 23 and continuing for approximately four-to-six weeks. Residents within the special census area are encouraged to participate as census workers make their way through various parts of the City collecting current population and housing information.
The partial special census was requested by the City and is being conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau to certify an increase in the city’s population in select areas where significant growth is believed to have occurred since the last full census in 2010. A certified growth in population would produce an increase in state-shared revenues to the city as State of Illinois income tax, local use tax and motor fuel tax are based on a per capita distribution. Naperville last held a special census in 2008.
It is important to note that this is not a citywide census. An interactive map identifying homes included in the partial census is available at www.naperville.il.us/specialcensus.
“We are not counting every household, but every resident is encouraged to get involved because all of Naperville will benefit from the extra revenue this special census could bring to our city,” said Mayor Steve Chirico. “If you live in a neighborhood included in the census, make sure to participate. If you don’t live in the special census area, you can help spread the word to neighbors and friends in those areas and encourage them to take part.”
Census enumerators are required to wear a badge identifying them as such and will be conducting interviews daily from approximately 9AM to 9PM, including weekends. Residents living in the special census area can expect to be asked a series of brief questions regarding basic facts about their household including names, ages, genders, race and a few basic questions about the housing structure. This census differs from the decennial census, as the interviews are brief, taking only a minute or two to complete. All information will only be used for the purpose of the special census.
Additional information about the partial special census, including a link to an interactive map to determine whether a specific home is within the special census area, is available at www.naperville.il.us/specialcensus.
