Veterans in Touch – February nuggets of knowledge

-

This may be the shortest month of the year, but it certainly has a lot of national months to celebrate. I found 67 in my research and I am sure there are more but you have to set limits sometimes.

Two of the national months in February that stand out for me. The first one is NATIONAL SENIOR INDEPENDENCE DAY. Since I have become a senior and will have gone through hip replacement surgery by the time you read this, it is especially important to both me and my lovely wife. The second one is SPUNKY OLD BROADS MONTH. We all know and have been around this celebrated group. To know them is to love them. Nuff said.

Another date to remember in February is VALENTINE’S DAY. Make sure you shower your loved ones with flowers, chocolates and a card. We have to keep the economy strong. But most of all, kind words and acts mean much more than the commercial celebration.

Lent starts in February. You know what that means? The 50th year of the Fish Fries start at Judd Kendall VFW Post 3873 in Naperville. They start on Fri., Feb. 9 and run every Friday through Good Friday. The hours are 4:30PM to 7:30PM. Belgio’s Catering will be doing the cooking. There will be fish to be sure, but they are providing other gourmet entrees every week. Exciting menus have been planned and it is all you care to eat. For more information visit the VFW website at www.napervfw3873.org.

Over the last couple of months I have had calls from family members about Veterans who needed help from the VA. They were crisis situations. Fortunately, we were able to get them the help they needed, but it doesn’t have to be a crisis.

The best thing family members can do for their Veterans is first make sure you know where their discharge papers or DD-214 are located. Everything starts with that document. Secondly, make sure they are signed up for VA healthcare. The Hines Community Outreach Team comes to the Naperville VFW Post the first Tuesday of every month from 9AM until 2PM.
