“Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.” These beautiful words by Melody Beattie truly represent the overwhelming gratitude all of us at Loaves & Fishes feel. The vibrancy of our organization continues to build on those who came before us, while we celebrate the many people who are passionately devoted to our neighbors in need now. Inspiring acts of kindness were never more apparent than during the holiday season. As we welcome a bright New Year, we do so with hearts full of gratitude.
Looking back over the past year, we are grateful for every gift and volunteer hour that came our way. One of my favorites is from 4-year old Julia. When our appeal letter came to her house, she wanted to know all about it and what it was for. After her parents explained that some people do not have enough food and are hungry, she rushed to her piggy bank and asked that they send her money, $4.87, to help other kids. Besides being such an inspiring reflection of her philanthropically minded parents, Julia serves as a joyful reminder that every gift is a treasure and together, they bring our mission to life.
Besides Julia’s gift, we were also grateful for numerous collections that ranged from a few essential cans of food to an entire semi-truck full of needed items. More than 420 people stepped up for Giving Tuesday and many others provided Hope Holiday meals.
Additionally, so many people came out to volunteer that all our volunteer needs were met, and with joy. We are indeed fortunate to be part of a community that rises together so others are lifted, too. These people ensure a bright vision for tomorrow, and Julia is leading the way.
