Little Friends offers unique and impactful school programs

-

For 52 years, Little Friends has been serving the needs of students with developmental disabilities. What began as a school for five young children with Down syndrome has emerged as a leading resource for children and adults with special challenges, and their families, as they navigate life and integrate into their communities. But Little Friends serves the needs of more than just those children and adults with autism.

Our Mansion High School, perhaps the least well known of our school programs, began in 1975, focusing on the needs of high school students with emotional challenges such as anxiety or bi-polar disorder. For students with emotional disabilities, traditional schooling can be stressful, frustrating and ineffective. Mansion High School is different. Students flourish in our therapeutic academic environment, where staff custom tailors lesson plans to their unique needs.

Our professional staff uses the Group Guidance Interaction Model, which teaches students to be responsible for each other. Through interaction, students experience changing values and learn how to make the proper decisions for the right reasons. Our curriculum includes four periods of academic course work that meets Illinois State Board of Education requirements, one lunch period and one period of group therapy. Very few alternative schools use this model, making Mansion High School unique and highly effective for our students, with most being able to reintegrate into their home school district within one year.

We are incredibly proud of the progress our students make each year, and we owe that success to the hard work of the students and the dedication of our amazing staff. We invite you to see Mansion High School, as well as Krejci Academy and Bridge High School, in action on October 11, when we host an Open House showcasing our innovative and impactful school programs.
