Naperville Police Officer Kevin Fasana was recently named the inaugural recipient of Edward-Elmhurst Health’s Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. Officer Fasana was recognized in a ceremony at Edward Hospital’s monthly Management Team meeting on Sept. 19, 2017.
Fasana, a 14-year veteran of the Naperville Police Department, was honored for his ability to handle calls with individuals who have a mental illness and leading the effort to provide mental health training for the department and its officers. Because of his calm, professional and mature approach, and ability to mediate volatile confrontations, Fasana has become one of the “go-to” officers in situations involving a person with mental illness.
Fasana led the initiative to bring back the department’s Crisis Intervention Team in 2016 and helped launch mental health training to teach officers how to recognize and handle individuals with mental illness at the scene.
The Officer of the Year Award is part of Edward-Elmhurst’s Law Enforcement Recognition Program, which began in 2016. The initiative is designed to show support for the system’s partners in law enforcement throughout the region, including police and sheriff’s departments in Naperville, Plainfield, St. Charles, and DuPage and Will Counties.
