Knowledge is power

-

Any parent whose child has just been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has to have a thousand questions running through their mind. The fear of the unknown is real, and the mystery of what lies ahead can be emotionally challenging. Fortunately, there are several resources available to help provide some semblance of control and comfort for those beginning this new journey.

For those seeking to find a better understanding of autism – those looking for facts accompanied by the research backing them up – I recommend an organization called the “Interactive Autism Network” (www.iancommunity.org). IAN was established in 2006 at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, and is funded by Autism Speaks and the Simons Foundation. Their goal is to share research that advances understanding and treatment of ASDs. It is by far the most robust website in terms of information that I have found, and contains links to everything for those who have been newly diagnosed with autism to specifics on different therapies and information on the latest studies.

There are many other websites and organizations throughout the country whose purpose is to help those diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. And while I can’t speak to the quality of all of these agencies, I can speak to their intentions to help those who need it. Every person I’ve met whose work helps those less fortunate is passionate and committed to the work that they do. That, of course, includes Little Friends, where we have been providing comprehensive services to those on the autism spectrum since 1965 – and where we are more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

No matter where you go, though, it is vital to get and understand information based upon facts and supported by research as soon as possible. Knowledge truly is power.
