Logan Lucky is almost like a distant sequel of Ocean’s 11. A less luxurious, more ridiculous, backwoods sequel.
Steven Soderbergh, who came out of semi-retirement to make this movie, brings the same breed of humor, excitement, and absurdity that he did on the Ocean’s films, then cranks it all up by a large margin.
Logan Lucky isn’t just funnier than any Ocean’s movie, but many of the kinds of gags that made Ocean’s stand out, are amplified to near farcical ridiculousness.
Adam Driver, Channing Tatum, and Riley Keough play West Virginia siblings from the, possibly cursed, blue collar Logan family.
To make ends meet they decide on robbing The Charlotte Motor Speedway on the day of the biggest race of the year. They enlist the help of an incarcerated explosives expert (played by Daniel Craig) and his two brothers. Suffice to say the whole cast shines like diamonds in a West Virginia coal mine.
Delivering equal parts side-splitting comedy, abstract absurdity, and heart. Particularly Driver, Craig, and Keough.
In this age of superhero cinema that we keep finding ourselves sinking deeper and deeper into, it’s a relief to see that an expert filmmaker like Soderbergh can still craft a light hearted, crime comedy that’s worth paying to see.
I give Logan Lucky 3.5/4 stars
