Transitions – Letters for My Son: Chronicles of a mother’s love

-

As the mother (and grandmother) of girls, I am hyperconscious of the messages they receive. They have more choices than the ones I did as a young woman. But they still have to face a torrent of ignorant and ugly ideas about females and expectations of them from various media and the occasional boor, a common struggle in our society.

Thus, I was delighted to become acquainted with Naperville resident Danielle Langford – educator, motivational speaker and author of Letters for My Son, a book of letters capturing her son’s life from infancy until young adulthood.

“It is a story of devotion, growth and most of all love… (that) all parents, especially mothers, can relate to.” The reviews on Amazon have been 100 percent positive. Mothers of daughters and sons approve of its nurturing and sometimes funny message of love.

An empowerment specialist, Danielle focuses on self-esteem, social media and self-respect. As an adjunct professor teaching Business Entrepreneurship at North Central College, she shares her energy, passion and minority perspective.

Speaking at schools, churches and professional groups, she empowers and motivates teen girls and women to live happy, successful lives. I asked her how her son felt about her female-centered speaking and she said he occasionally has to tell her, “Hey, mom, I’m not one of the girls.”

For Danielle, her son is a conduit to girls, other boys, and their parents “who need her message of love and peace at a time when we all need it. This book is intended to invoke feelings of protection, emotion, and a yearning for affection.”

If more parents read this book, I can relax a bit about the men who will meet and interact with the wonderful young women in my life.
