Today we’re remembering our friend Dick Locher

Above / One of Dick Locher’s illustrations is featured in the Century Walk mural that graces the Naperville Art League Gallery as it faces Fifth Avenue at Center Street. The design depicts Dick Locher’s likeness drawing Dick Tracy. The illustration is among dozens of the “World’s Greatest Artists.”

A big fan of independent enterprise, Dick Locher often volunteered his advice and talents for Positively Naperville. One Christmas he assisted with the “Grow Your Heart” campaign for the independent business community.

Born in Dubuque, Iowa, on June 4, 1929, longtime Naperville resident Dick Locher died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2017.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist for the Chicago Tribune also became the comic strip artist who wrote and drew Dick Tracy until he retired in 2011.

For many years Dick Locher and his wife, Mary, welcomed our cameras into his studio to help chronicle the work he started after finishing a long career as one the world’s most prolific editorial cartoonists; best known, perhaps, for his contributions to keep Dick Tracy alive and well in B&W and on the colorful funny pages for nearly 30 years.

Whether participating in a Century Walk art project— sculptures and murals— or sharing the story of how he came to illustrate the world’s most famous detective, soft-spoken Locher was full of fun, wit and wisdom, often lending samples of his original work for our pages.

Just last fall, he teamed up with Naperville artist Marianne Lisson Kuhn to create a contemporary image of Dick Tracy for the library/lounge in the new Hotel Indigo.

Our deepest sympathy is extended to Mary Locher, family and friends.
