Real Life – Rolling with the punches

-

On a recent trip with my husband’s side of the family, in addition to the fantastic itinerary, we had a chance to share stories, face to face.

One of the big things going on in our own lives had been the mixed-emotions experience of selling a house. Naturally, there were inquiries about this process, and since I had just emerged from the fray, more or less, the saga was fresh in my mind.

According to survey results published in the UK’s Daily Mail, of the top ten stressors in modern life, buying or selling a property ranks first. I was a bit surprised by this, but when I learned that planning a wedding and starting a new job also figured in the top ten, I felt slightly proud that in the last twelve months I had not been prescribed a rest cure to recover my senses!

Letting go is hard, but I may be better at it than I think.

Waiting for an acceptable purchase offer, meanwhile keeping our home picture-perfect, was grueling. What I was not prepared for was the race to the finish. The prospective owners’ closing date coincided precariously close to our safari departure. As if planning for that trip was not enough to occupy all free time, I had an entire household of furnishings to sell, consign, donate or move.

It was tempting to procrastinate. In 2016, according to the Self-Storage Association’s statistics, there were 58,000 self-storage facilities in the United States, with an average of 566 units per facility. So much stuff! I decided not to add to that pile, exchanging time spent on beloved sports and activities for meetings, negotiations, sorting and related decisions.

After hearing this tale, my sister-in-law responded her fellow Swiss do not often sell properties once they are acquired.

Maybe this contributes to the peace and beauty her country is known for.

Me, I’m ready for kick-boxing. (c)
