Enjoyment comes with accomplishment

-

I am definitely enjoying springtime. The number and variety of birds at my backyard feeders have increased, and, every now and then, the squirrels even share access. Tulips and daffodils are poking out, including some I know I did not plant. I guess that’s something else to thank squirrels for.

One project at a time I have been getting the yard ready, clearing away the detritus that seemed to be a little more prevalent this year because of the late fall and November snow. Something instituted this year, for my own well-being, is a one bag rule; breaking tasks into manageable and measurable increments. Rather than marathon work sessions, I set and accomplish a goal, followed by a break for an hour, a day, or sometimes longer. The goal might be time spent, or yard waste bags stuffed, but, regardless, it’s a milestone on the path to a greater end. I know there is always another project and, at the end of the day, this is about enjoyment as well as accomplishment.

Speaking of enjoyment and accomplishment, thanks to all for helping with a very successful round of Candidates’ Forums. The Confederation has been doing these a long time, and providing community-wide access to potential decision makers is one of our most important roles. Post election, we will invite City Council incumbents and winners to a round table discussion at our April meeting. Our goal is simply getting a better understanding of priorities and purpose moving forward. Personally, I hope Council members establish a “one bag rule” as well, looking at each issue/opportunity on its individual merits and not coming into the job with an ideological agenda that dictates positions regardless of the impacts on neighbors and neighborhoods.

I hope to see you on Sat., April 22. More details are at www.napervillehomeowners.com.
