Edward Hospital has awarded its 2016 EMS (Emergency Medical Services) “Run of the Year” to Naperville Fire Department Station 7/Red Shift, Engine 7, Medic 7 and Medic 9.

The crews were recognized for their response to a call on December 30 in which they found a mother had delivered her baby prematurely with the amniotic sac intact. The delivery, called an “en caul” birth, is an extremely rare occurrence that happens about once in every 80,000 births.

One of the crews on the call immediately transported the baby to Edward Hospital, while another crew continued to care for the mother, who was later also taken to Edward.

“Under tremendous pressure, the team used quick assessment and decision-making skills, along with amazing teamwork, which resulted in a good outcome for both mother and baby,” said Bill Kottmann, President & CEO, Edward Hospital.

Recipients of the award, which was presented at an Edward management team meeting on March 20, included Lt. Jim Harding and Firefighter/Paramedics Doug Erwin, Mike Polizzi, Brad Sarna, Dave Stevenson, Henry Van Bogaert and Tom Wiese.

‘Run of the Quarter’ is year-long program recognizing exceptional service

The event capped off the year-long “Run of the Quarter” program in which area paramedics are honored for exceptional ambulance runs. In the “Run of the Quarter” program, the Edward EMS Team reviews ambulance runs by pre-hospital providers and selects one to be recognized every three months based on the following criteria:

  • Excellent communication from the field that resulted in the timely delivery of pertinent clinical information to the Edward Emergency Department staff
  • Clear and thorough documentation
  • Superior clinical assessment skills that resulted in accurate recognition of a clinical situation
  • Behavior exceeding the call of duty in the field
  • Superior partnership and teamwork with Edward Hospital.

This call was selected from over 10,000 possible submissions throughout all of 2016.
