Naperville Gardener – Christmas cookie tips from the Naperville Garden Club

-

Since 1961 the Naperville Garden Club has hosted a Christmas Tea. First held at the Woman’s Club building on Washington Street, attendees received a teacup as a memento. Tickets were $1.25 and decorations made by club members were sold.

This fundraising success has grown to be the “Cup of Cheer™ House Walk, Holiday Market and Tea.” During the December event, ticket holders tour homes decorated for the holidays, shop the Holiday Market and enjoy tea or coffee and home-baked cookies.

It is a requirement of membership to bake six dozen small cookies for the tea. We are proud of the cookies we offer and here are some tips to help you present a beautiful and delicious tray of cookies to your family, friends and Santa!

To have a dazzling, attractive and irresistible display of cookies, you need a variety of cookies. We have found that any cookie dipped in chocolate and/or dusted with sprinkles elevates it to a whole new level. Left behind on the cookie tray are often yummy cookies that just couldn’t compete with the ones dressed to come to the party. We request that our members not bake bar cookies or brownies because they tend to dry out. If we are going to indulge in a few extra calories, they better be worth it!

Who doesn’t like to experience all that the dessert table has to offer and if the cookies are small, it’s not such a calorie-laden indulgence. We require that the cookies be small— as small as a quarter and no bigger than the circle you make with your thumb and forefinger. So one recipe will make lots of cookies.

If you have a favorite chocolate chip recipe, divide your usual scoop of dough into fourths and you will have four times as many cookies as you usually do. (Remember to dip in chocolate!) I use miniature cookie cutters and again, one recipe of cookie dough makes a lot of cookies.

We bring our cookies on Monday for the tea on Thursday and Friday the first week in December. Cookies can be placed on serving trays and covered with plastic wrap so they will stay fresh throughout the tea. You can have your tray(s) of cookies ready and waiting at least a week ahead of time.

Happy baking and Merry Christmas!
