Senior Voices – Time for a closer look

-

We hope you have been following the topic by the City of Naperville as to what can be counted as income for people of low income who are using vouchers for housing.

There were so many pros and cons, it was a difficult decision for all. I don’t think there is one person that doesn’t wish to help people in time of need for housing. The City Council passed, by one vote, to allow voucher holders to count all monies received as income.

The Senior Task Force is dedicated to helping seniors find affordable housing. It would be perfect if the program were made fair to both voucher holders and landlords. Perhaps the government needs to take a closer look at making a few changes to the program in order to make it desirable for the landlord to want to participate.

We look forward to more education of the program to landlords. Our Senior Task Force wants to help in educating the landlords so they will not only understand it more thoroughly, but also what the advantages are to them.

Since I usually end my column on a funny note, and since it is Thanksgiving, I would like to tell you about a turkey we will never forget.

One year I was visiting my son, Erik, in Denver. He had just purchased a smoker and had read up on how to cook a turkey in it. Erik prepared the right wood etc., put in the turkey and had asked his neighbor if he would look after it while we dropped off one of the kids to camp.

We were held up longer than planned and Erik kept worrying about getting back in time for his turkey.
He kept saying, “Gosh, I hope John is looking after my turkey!”

As he entered and stopped in the driveway, he leaped out of the car and ran to the back yard. We heard him yelling as we came around the corner.

Erik exclaimed, “Look at my turkey! Look at it! It is shrunk!”

We looked in and couldn’t believe it. It was about the size of a large grapefruit. We were shocked! Then his neighbor came out and said the turkey had cooked enough, so he took it out and put in a Cornish hen! What a hoot!

Happy Turkey day to all!
