At the movies: ‘Sully’

-

The all-American, aviation biopic “Sully,” starring Tom Hanks and Aaron Eckhart, is the best movie Clint Eastwood has made in years.

It’s short and to the point, yet delivers all the vital information and emotion necessary to understanding the overwhelming gravity of life or death situations and the people who face them head on.

“Sully” tells the story of Capt. Chesley Sullenberger, who very famously landed US Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River without a single casualty, and the following National Transportation Safety Board review of the incident and whether or not Sullenberger was responsible.

America’s starry eyed, middle-aged sweetheart Tom Hanks offers an honest, succinct performance as Capt. Chesley Sullenberger and Aaron Eckhart matches it with his portrayal of Co-Pilot Jeff Skiles. Eastwood weaves an intriguing narrative oscillating between a linear story structure, flashback, and imagination. Even with all this jumping around, everything feels relevant and required in order to capture the full understanding of Sullenberger’s thoughts and actions in those critical moments that would decide between life or death.

There is hardly a more intense scene in recent memory than that of the plane crashing into the river and it’s a wonder that Eastwood is able to keep you so on edge even though you know everyone lives.

The comfortable, real performances of Hanks and Eckhart pair perfectly with the directorial prestige of Clint Eastwood and his ability to humanize an overly surreal event leaving you with newfound appreciation for those who keep us safe in the skies.

I give “Sully” 4/4 stars
