Art Talk – International Language of Film

-

In 1964 award-winning filmmaker Michael Kutza founded the Chicago International Film Festival. Since then, the outspoken proponent of foreign-language films has been bringing world-class movies to Chicago in order to meet the festival’s mission of “fostering better communication between people of diverse cultures through the art of film and the moving image.” Kutza’s efforts resulted in the discovery of hundreds of ground-breaking directors including Martin Scorsese, John Carpenter, and Wim Wenders.

The After Hours Film Society, recognizing the impact of invention, followed in Kutza’s footsteps and founded a film festival of its own: a smaller scale celebration of student filmmakers who submit shorter (but not less impactful) films for consideration. Now in its 14th year, the festival attracts emerging filmmakers from around the world, all responding to the society’s call for artists.

This year, over 100 entries were received from elementary, high school, college and graduate students from across the nation and from as far reaching as Australia, Taiwan, and Romania.

A team of judges will meet to screen, dissect, analyze and rank each film based on age level and category (fiction, non-fiction and animation/experimental). Films receiving the highest ratings will be compiled into a special program that will be presented to the public at the After Hours Film Society’s “Say It In Eight” Student Film Festival at 5PM on Mon., Oct. 17 at the Tivoli Theatre, 5021 Highland, Downers Grove, IL.

From live action to experimental, this year’s winning films promise to challenge and entertain. Festival goers will hear the voice of the competing national and international students and perhaps be among the first to see the works of the next wave of trailblazing leaders of the film industry.
