Teen’s Taste – S’more Schmacon, please!

-

My latest dining experience took me to a restaurant I had never visited and I’m glad that I found Schmaltz Deli in my backyard! Schmaltz Deli was founded in 2004 by Howard Bender. It’s an authentic Jewish Deli and it is located at 1512 N. Naper Blvd. Hours are 7AM to 7PM Monday – Friday and 8AM to 3PM on Saturday and Sunday.

The experience from the start was amazing. The cashier taking your order was upbeat and friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. Since I had never been there, I had several questions and he had no issues answering them with a smile, even though there was a line behind me.

For my sandwich I choose the #36 SLT and added Turkey to it. This had a fantastic taste – it was their famous Schmacon, which is their better bacon alternative – bigger bolder and better flavor with less sodium, fat and calories, sun-rippened tomatoes, lettuce and low-fat tomato basil mayonnaise on a toasted tomato basil bread…. Which equals mouthwatering amazing.

My mom had the #8 Vegabond which was all-breast meat chicken salad made with red grapes on a whole wheat bread with lettuce and tomato. She said it was delicious and full of flavor.

You can ask for all of the sandwiches to be “overstuffed,” which is their regular sandwich, or if you want less meat ask for it to be “understuffed.” I did not know that before I ordered my sandwich and it was definitely over-stuffed. It was huge and I could not finish all of it. I would definitely consider splitting a sandwich.

I have never been to New York, but my mom tells me this is just like a New York-style deli. I am definitely going back to experience some more Schmacon sandwiches.

So please stop into Schmaltz’s deli and tell them Jack the foodie sent ya to get “overstuffed” on the Schmacon!
