UPDATE, July 11, 2019 / Today we are remembering Justin Wegner, son of Cathy and Ed Wegner, and brother to Jason, for his incredible spirit for all the days of his life.
Original Post, August 8, 2016 / Fun Bunch is planning a family-oriented fundraiser to help a family deal with expenses as they navigate cancer treatment for their son. The Fun Bunch is a group of parents that attended their kids athletic events over the years at Naperville Central and created a great bond and strong friendships.
This spring, one of the kids they spent years cheering on, Justin Wegner, was having a great freshman season as a catcher for University of Wisconsin-Whitewater when he started not feeling well.
After multiple tests, doctor visits and scans, Justin was diagnosed with a very rare sarcoma soft-cell cancer. The Wegner Family researched the best ways to treat the cancer and determined that Lurie’s Childrens Hospital in Chicago and MD Anderson in Houston were the best fit. That meant trips to Chicago for long stays and eventually trips to Houston as well.
That’s when the Fun Bunch jumped into action. Even with insurance, the unforeseen expenses associated with travel, hotels, etc. the group new they wanted to help one of their own.
Bunch of fun planned 6-10PM Fri., Aug. 12 at Sports Zone
Tom Clifford, one of the founding “Fun Bunchers,” offered up his facility – the Sports Zone in Aurora to host an event. Soon the word spread and now they are gearing up for hopefully a great turn out this Friday, August 12. From 6-10 PM the entrance fee will be $30 per person, which includes, 4 hour wristband for park activities like mini golf, batting cages, go-karts and more – and for an additional $5 each individual will get a hot dog, chips, a beverage and dessert.
Other activities will include a bags tournament, rocket bungee, 50/50 raffle and more! Raffle items are still being collected, so come on out with the family for a great night for an even better cause, organizers said.

Ed and Cathy Wegner are truly humbled by the outpouring of love and support for their family. During Justin’s chemo treatments at Lurie’s in Chicago, they have been able to stay in the Ronald McDonald House, and they would like to show their appreciation by asking folks to bring new or unused household items that are needed at the RMH.
