UPDATE July 24, 2016 / Thanks to a storm that blew away some of the high degree day temperatures late Saturday, glorious sunshine and slightly lower humidity greeted nearly 600 participants who arrived to support the 6th Annual Naperville Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk early Sunday morning. The family-friendly event began and ended at the Riverwalk Grand Pavilion.

According to one of the organizers, Ann Zediker, all 550 purple t-shirts were taken by the time teams began the trek along the Riverwalk. And more than $67,000 had been raised by start time.

Signs indicated folks were walking and wearing purple for moms, grandmothers, step fathers, Sally, Cindy, Johnny, Edwin, Gus, Lucy and Jane, just to name a few of the hundreds of individuals who attracted walkers to support the event.

Mayor Steve Chirico set the walkers in motion, then stayed behind to help folks with group photos via their iPhones.

The Pink Fire Truck, home based in Downers Grove, was stationed near the start line to help promote cancer research and to pay tribute to women challenged by the wide variety of cancers awaiting a cure.

Since 2012, the Naperville Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk has brought together a community of people who have a common interest of finding better treatments, early detection and ultimately a cure for pancreatic cancer.

Ann Zediker’s father died of pancreatic cancer in 2010. Ever since she’s been dedicated to raising funds and heightening awareness for research to give patients a fighting chance.

Every individual who walks paves the way to a better future by increasing funding for pancreatic cancer and celebrating the progress made in the fight against this disease.

Original Post / July 14, 2016

At 9AM on Sunday, July 24 the 6th annual Naperville Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk will step off on the Naperville Riverwalk.

By 2030, Pancreatic Cancer is expected to become the second-leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Research is hope, and through the Lustgarten Foundation, every dollar raised goes directly towards Pancreatic Cancer Research.

This year Southpaw from the Chicago White Sox will be joining the Walk.

For more information, contact Ann Zediker at jazediker@comcast.net or visit www.pancreaticcancerresearchevents.org.

Editor’s Note / Though the final tally for the 2016 Naperville Pancreatic Cancer Walk is not yet available, the event demonstrates the giving nature of the Riverwalk as the centerpiece for many successful fundraising activities throughout the year.

Created as a gift from citizens to commemorate the city’s sesquicentennial in 1981, the Riverwalk is celebrating its 35th anniversary. With successes such as the Naperville Pancreatic Cancer Walk, the Riverwalk could be considered the timely gift that keeps on giving. Thanks to all.
