UPDATE, June 6, 2016 / A gorgeous evening welcomed a group of 2,000 run participants for the sold-out 2016 GLOW 5K, now a run/walk/stroll for reading in its 15th year. All ages, families, teams and individuals turned out to run for reading on June 4, a popular event that benefits the Jeanine Nicarico Memorial Fund.

Just prior to the beginning of the run, the Nicarico family presented grants to local schools for literacy projects. Hundreds of spectators attended the event, lining the running route with applause and cheers.

And watch for details of the 2017 GLOW 5K about the same time next year.

Original 2016 Post / The 2016 GLOW 5K Run is set to begin at 8:15PM Sat., June 4.

New this year is a wave start, consisting of many staggered starts of small groups instead of one giant start for all participants, all ages.  Groups will be clearly marked. Wave start and Chrono track timing systems attached to your race bib eliminate the need to attach a device to your shoelace. Your time will start and stop when you go over the start/finish line.

Organizers request runners arrive a little earlier than usual for the wave start. Participants will learn more about the wave start when they pick up their packets at Naperville Running Company.

A little ‘Run for Reading’ history & moving right along to June 4

Since the event first stepped off from Hill Middle School 14 years ago, the 5K run has traveled from early morning locations at Hill and River Woods Elementary to an evening happening three years ago, now highlighted with live entertainment glowing in the dark, beginning and ending at Fifth Avenue Station.

Originally known as the Jeanine Nicarico Memorial Fund “Run for Reading,” the 15th annual event continues to celebrate the life of Jeanine Nicarico while supporting literacy, fitness and family.

Glowing and running is fun for all ages!

Tracey Nelson returns as Race Director.

The chip-timed 5K course route takes participants on a scenic run through one of Naperville’s established neighborhoods, winding down Plank Road, with a flat stretch, finishing at Fifth Avenue Station.

Water and encouragement will be provided along the course.

Entertainment by Tres Mustache will begin at 6:30PM.

Spectators are welcome to cheer on the participants starting at Fifth Avenue Station, all along 5th Avenue and Plank Road and back again where everybody can celebrate safely glowing in the dark.

After the run, participants and friends are invited to a celebration tent with food by Belgio’s Catering,  Hugo’s Frog Bar & Fish House and Jet’s Pizza; refreshments; as well as music and awards sponsored by local businesses.

Last call will be 9:30PM with the tent closing at 10:30pm. People purchasing beer or wine must be 21 years of age with a valid ID.

glow 5K“Last year we had 2,000 registered runners/walkers, and we are anticipating similar numbers again this year,” emailed Pat Nicarico.  “Due to safety constraints, we are required to limit the participants to a maximum of 2,000.”

The popularity of the sell-out run is the reason early registration is recommended. Last year, registration reached capacity more than a week before the event. Sponsorships also are available.

“Tom and I along with our daughters, Chris and Kathy, and the Run committee thank the community for its generosity in the past,” added Nicarico, noting her family is looking forward to June 4.

Registration is now open to first 2,000 applicants
