Recognizing Fair Housing Month

-

April is Fair Housing Month. As a member of Naperville’s Housing Advisory Commission I am proud that our community has taken the national Fair Housing mandate a step further by expanding the Federal definition of fairness through additional factors including gender, military service, and more.

Despite daily news reports filled with demagoguery, hate, and fear, it is heartening to know that, as a community, we are committed to looking at people as individuals, and not as stereotypes. By making decisions based on pertinent facts, and not broad brush generalizations or innuendos, we become stronger through diversity and daily exposure to different perspectives and attitudes. More information on Naperville’s commitment to housing fairness can be found at www.naperville.il.us/fhac.aspx.

The Confederation’s March meeting included a brief discussion of neighborhood “curb appeal” and the appropriateness of additional municipal involvement and direction in homeowner decisions around their property maintenance and appearance. This is a complex issue with no easy answers and is one the Confederation will continue to focus on in the months ahead. One idea we are considering is the creation of a “Green Team” that could meet with neighborhoods to discuss landscaping and steps property owners can take to keep their home looking its best. Your thoughts and ideas are welcome, because, after all, it’s your front yard we are talking about!

Our April 16 meeting (8AM in meeting Room B of the Naperville Municipal Center) is our annual opportunity to sit down with members of City Council, “off the dais,” for an open discussion of problems, priorities, and opportunities in our community. We appreciate this annual chance to informally interact with our elected officials and are looking forward to this dialogue.

As always, more details will be at www.napervillehomeowners.com.

Enjoy Spring and I hope to see you on April 16!

UPDATE from Bob Fischer, April 6, 2016

Council Members to Meet with Homeowners ‘Off the Dais’

The next Naperville Area Homeowners Confederation meeting will begin at 8AM on Sat., April 16, 2016, for coffee and networking in Meeting room B of the Naperville Municipal Center.

The April meeting is the annual opportunity hosted by the homeowners group to meet with members of Naperville’s City Council, “off the dais,” for a dialogue on the future of our community.

This is an excellent opportunity for homeowners to interact with their elected representatives and gain insights into community issues and opportunities.

Coffee and networking for this month’s meeting will be sponsored by Bartlett Tree Experts.

The business portion of the meeting will begin at 8:30AM and adjournment is expected at 10AM “so everyone can get on with their day,” Bob Fischer said.

The Naperville Municipal Center is located at 400 S. Eagle Street.

FYI: Since 1979, the Naperville Area Homeowners Confederation has served the community by providing the means to foster communication between member associations, homeowners, and government officials. Through this communication, networking, and neighbors-helping-neighbors, the Confederation is the vehicle through which we, as homeowners and residents, can stay abreast of community affairs and generate a positive influence on our area’s future. Monthly meetings are held on the third Saturday, September through May. The annual meeting and election of officers is in May.
