Temporary Lane Closures on Washington Street Begin Monday, January 18

-

Above / Ongoing work through spring 2016 will be related to Centralized Traffic Management System Installation.

Starting Monday, January 18, temporary rolling lane closures will occur along portions of Washington Street to allow for installation of fiber optic cable related to the City’s Centralized Traffic Management System project.

Weather depending, work will take place from 9AM to 3PM Monday through Friday along Washington Street between Bauer Road and 5th Avenue as well as Gartner and Bailey roads.

At least one lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times, and work is anticipated to last through spring of 2016. Motorists are urged to use caution and allow additional time when traveling in this area.

Overview of City’s Centralized Traffic Management System

The City’s Centralized Traffic Management System is a multi-year, multi-part project meant to modernize and allow for real-time programming and operation of Naperville’s traffic signals. The first phase of the project will connect the three existing traffic signal systems that run along the entire length of Washington Street from Warrenville to Royce roads. The more modernized system technology will allow for better coordination, control and real-time monitoring over signals on this heavily traveled roadway. The system also allows for automatic notification of traffic signal malfunctions to the appropriate personnel, allowing for faster fixes to keep traffic moving.

Initial installation of this system also sets the groundwork for future monitoring and adjusting of signals based on real-time road conditions.

Additional work related to the project may occur in the parkway along the entire length of Washington Street but is not anticipated to significantly disrupt motorists, businesses, or residences in the area. Temporary sidewalk closures may be needed at times; these will be communicated to the public as they occur.
