I am writing this month’s note before Thanksgiving. It is early in the morning, the house and neighborhood are still quiet; a perfect time to ponder thanks and gratitude. While almost any time could and should be a moment to be grateful, more often than not we let the “noise” of everyday life get in the way. In the rush to get to where we are going, put out figurative fires, respond to the crisis du jour, or just take care of business, it is easy to forget to acknowledge people who make life easier, fulfilling, and worth living.
At the top of my list is family. They are my reason for being and motivator of my daily life. I don’t know what I would do without them, nor do I want to find out. I’m thankful for my health, home, heat in the winter, air conditioning in the summer, and Social Security checks. Knowing there is food in the refrigerator and pantry is another source of comfort.
Moving outward, my extended family, neighbors and the neighborhood provide meaning to life. I truly appreciate people willing to donate time and talents to the community. Most devote this time expecting little in return and are rarely disappointed.
One group of volunteers I am particularly thankful for are those who serve the larger community on boards, commissions, and study groups. Our December monthly meeting (8AM, Sat., Dec. 12, in Municipal Center Meeting Room B) will focus on Naperville’s Boards and Commissions, who they are, what they do, and how people can become involved.
I am grateful for everyone who participates in Homeowners Confederation meetings.
Lastly, this is the time of the year to share our blessings with those who may have less. Extend your benevolence, sow seeds and help grow gratitude.
