Early snow falls throughout suburbs, creates pretty pictures with Naperville landmarks

-

According to the National Weather Service, the deep snow officially recorded in Chicago late Friday and into Saturday (as much as 11 inches) is the most one snowstorm has dropped on the suburbs in November since 1895.

And awakening on Saturday to the sight of the heavy wet snow sent youngsters packing snowmen and to local sled hills where joyful noises echoed throughout local neighborhoods. At the same time, local photographers were called out to capture the winter-like occasion, still faced with 30 more days of autumn on the calendar.

As an aside, PN’s editor was made aware of flight cancellations early Saturday morning when her brother called to say he was unable to depart from Boulder, Colorado, as he tried to fly to Chicago in time for the birth of his first grandchild.  (A little girl arrived without him at 7:35AM Nov. 21, weighing 7 lbs. 8 oz. Mother and infant are doing fine.)

Checking further on airport activity at the end of the day, O’Hare had canceled 300 flights while Midway Airport had canceled 110 flights. Both airports experienced delays all day. According to an online search Sunday evening, neither airport currently is reporting weather-related warnings or major cancellations, but calling or checking scheduled departures in advance is advised.

Depending whether leaves have fallen from trees or not along the parkways or the expanse of open fields, the depth of drifting snow around Naperville varies greatly. Heavy snow on some trees caused some of their branches to break, blocking streets.

Early Sunday, sunshine and blue skies complemented views of the snow-covered backdrop of the old quarry with a view from Eagle Street. Water was steaming as the temperature hovered around 15 degrees and a gaggle of geese appeared to be frozen still.

Thanks to early morning crews from the Naperville Park District, the winding brick paths along the Riverwalk were cleared.
