Waubonsie Valley sophomore running back Tanner Westwood
Westwood’s eight-yard touchdown pass to Mike France in overtime ended the game as 30th-seeded Waubonsie Valley upset third-seeded Edwardsville, 20-17. After coming through with a second halfback pass at a most opportune time following his pass against Naperville Central back in September, Westwood’s late heroics helped the Warriors capitalize on Max Ihry’s 130 rushing yards and two TDs.
Defensive Player of the Week
Benet junior safety Danny O’Malley
O’Malley had three of the four interceptions for Tim Cederblad’s defense as 12th-seeded Benet beat 21st-seeded St. Charles North, 21-14. Two of the three picks came within a four-minute stretch late in regulation as the Redwings held on to record their first postseason victory since 2012.
