October Events at North Central College

Through Oct. 8, Art exhibit: NCC presents an art exhibit by Chicago painter Stella Zee. This exhibit is free and open to the public through Oct. 8 in the College’s Oesterle Library Gallery, 320 E. School St. Call (630) 637-5700 for gallery hours.

Through Oct. 11, Art exhibit: NCC will showcase artwork by sculptor Marina Kuchinski through Oct. 11. Titled “For Only,” the free exhibit will be on display in NCC’s Schoenherr Gallery, 171 E. Chicago Ave.

Oct. 3, Day of service: NCC invites community members to join its annual day of service called Intersection, which runs 7:30AM to 1PM Sat., Oct. 3. Individual and family volunteers can choose among nine sites, from serving at a local senior community or food pantry, and register online at intersection2015.eventbrite.com. Check-in takes place at either North Central’s Harold and Eva White Activities Center, 325 E. Benton Ave., or Grace Pointe Church Plainfield at 14210 Lincoln Highway. Oct. 3, Music: Chicago Sinfonietta presents “Tap In. Turn Up” under the direction of Maestra Mei-Ann Chen. The concert begins at 3PM Sat., Oct. 3, in NCC’s Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Tickets are $60, $48 and $10.

Oct. 3, Music: NCC presents Compañia Flamenca José Porcel and his company of dancers in a performance of classic flamenco with a live orchestra at 8PM Sat., Oct. 3, in the College’s Pfeiffer Hall, 310 E. Benton Ave. Tickets are $35, $30 and $25.

Oct. 6, Lectures: NCC hosts its fall term lecture series Topics In Politics presented by faculty in the College’s political science department. The hour-long series focuses on timely political issues and begins at noon Tues., Oct. 6, in the theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St. For more info, call (630) 637-5342. Oct. 6, Lecture: NCC presents a free lecture, titled “Action Heroes for Globalization,” at 7PM Tues., Oct. 6, in Smith Hall at Old Main, 30 N. Brainard St. Focusing on the topics of globalization, neoliberalism and the corporate entertainment industry, the lecture is presented by Lee Artz, professor of media studies at Purdue-Calumet University and author of “Global Entertainment Media: A Critical Introduction.” For more info, call (630) 637-5132.

Oct. 8, Lecture: NCC welcomes Alexander Barna, outreach coordinator at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Chicago, who will give a free lecture at 7PM Thurs., Oct. 8, in the College’s Smith Hall at Old Main, 30 N. Brainard St. Barna will present a workshop on Arab stereotypes and the many ways U.S. citizens often carry and perpetuate negative labels. For more info, call (630) 637-5132.

Oct. 8-11, Theatre: NCC welcomes guest Jason Gerace to direct student actors in Tennessee Williams’ master work “A Streetcar Named Desire.” Four performances of this great American tragedy begin at 7:30PM Oct. 8-10 and at 2PM Oct. 11 in the College’s Madden Theatre at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Tickets are $10/adults and $8/students and seniors.

Oct. 10, Music: The DuPage Symphony Orchestra presents “Two Times Tchaikovsky,” featuring the 2012 Young Concert Artists International winner Aleksey Semenenko. The concert begins at 8PM Sat., Oct. 10, in NCC’s Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Tickets range from $37.50 to $14.50.

Oct. 11-Dec. 3, Art exhibit: NCC presents an art exhibit by printmaker Robert Schwieger. This exhibit is free and open to the public Oct. 11 through Dec. 3 in the College’s Oesterle Library Gallery, 320 E. Oct. 12, Visit Day: High school students and their parents or guardians are invited to attend NCC’s Visit Day on Mon., Oct. 12, in the Wentz Concert Hall lobby, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Visitors can choose to attend a morning session with check-in at 9:30AM or a later one at 11:45AM. Both sessions offer opportunities to take a walking tour and attend informative sessions on financial aid, academic highlights and student life, with optional tours of athletic and fine arts facilities. Oct. 16, Music: NCC presents “An Evening with Jazz Pianist Chris White” along with supporting North Central jazz faculty artists at 8PM Fri., Oct. 16, in the College’s Madden Theatre at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Tickets are $20/adults and $15/students and seniors.

Oct. 16-Dec. 6, Art exhibit: NCC showcases a free art exhibit titled “Land up High .” featuring painters Ed Herbeck and Yves Paquette. The exhibit is available Oct. 16 through Dec. 6 in the College’s Schoenherr Gallery, 171 E. Oct. 17, Transfer visit: NCC will host a visit program Sat., Oct. 17, for transfer students. Visitors can learn about academic choices, transfer admission process, scholarships and financial aid. Registration begins at 9:45AM in Smith Hall at Old Main, 30 N. Brainard St., and concludes with a walking tour of campus at 10:45AM. Oct. 20, Dramatic reading: NCC welcomes playwright Jamil Khoury and members of Chicago’s Silk Road Rising Theatre who will perform a reading of Khoury’s play “Mosque Alert” at 7PM Tues., Oct. 20, in the College’s Madden Theatre at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Set in a fictionalized Naperville, the play explores local resistance to the building of a mosque. For more info, call (630) 637-5132.

Oct. 21-22, 24, Theatre: NCC presents the student-directed play “Wasteland” by Chicago playwright Susan Felder, whose complex piece presents the story of two U.S. prisoners held underground during the Vietnam War. Three performances will be staged at 7:30PM Oct. 21, 22 and 24 in the College’s theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St. Tickets are $5/adults and $3/students and seniors.

Oct. 22, Music: NCC presents Peter Frampton, celebrated rock guitarist and lead singer for the British band The Herd. Titled “Raw, an Acoustic Tour,” the concert begins at 8PM Thurs., Oct. 22, in the College’s Pfeiffer Hall, 310 E. Benton Ave. Tickets are $95, $85 and $75.

Oct. 23, Music: NCC’s annual Homecoming Kickoff Concert opens the concert season for the College’s Cardinal Chorus, Chamber Singers, Women’s Chorale, Concert Choir, Concert Winds, Symphonic Band and Jazz Combo I. The free concert begins at 8PM Fri., Oct. 23, in the College’s Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Tickets are required.

Oct. 24, Parade: NCC invites the public to view its annual Homecoming parade starting at 12:45PM Sat., Oct. 24. The parade takes place on the College’s campus and begins at North Brainard and East School streets and proceeds south on Brainard to Championship Plaza, where a pep rally will be held. Oct. 24, Cardinal football: The NCC Cardinals will play their Homecoming conference football game vs. Wheaton College at 2PM Sat., Oct. 24, at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium, 455 S. Oct. 25, Music: NCC presents singer Jonny Lang in concert at 6PM Sun., Oct. 25, in the College’s Wentz Concert Hall at the Fine Arts Center, 171 E. Chicago Ave. He’ll perform selections from his popular release “Fight For My Soul.” Tickets are $85 and $75.

Oct. 28, Music: NCC presents its annual Honors Choral Invitational, featuring guest ensembles and the College’s Cardinal Chorus, Chamber Singers, Women’s Chorale and Concert Choir. The concert begins at 7:30PM Wed., Oct. 28, in the College’s Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Tickets are $5/adults and $3/students and seniors.

Oct. 30-31, Theatre: Naperville’s Brightside Theater stages “Noises Off” at 8PM on Oct. 30-31 in NCC’s theatre at Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S. Ellsworth St. For more info and to purchase tickets, visit brightsidetheatre.com.

Oct. 31, Music: The DuPage Symphony Orchestra performs its “Halloween Concert,” featuring costumes and storytelling by the musicians. Two concerts will be presented at 10:30AM and 12:30PM Sat., Oct. 31, in NCC’s Wentz Concert Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. Tickets range from $15.50 to $7.50.
