At the Movies: ‘Everest’

-

The newest visual blockbuster “Everest” sets a familiar scene.

It has all the markings of a traditional adventure/disaster thriller with its characters at constant odds, the loving family waiting at home, and the ultimate goal. However, this goal is what creates the distinct intrigue that sets this film apart from other disaster thrillers. There is no conceivable purpose for reaching the Mountain’s summit. This is not a mission to save the world nor to attain fame and fortune – so why do they do it?

Luckily, this burning question won’t stop a single moviegoer from enjoying the suspense and visual effects which are all very well done. I could feel the stinging snow and the gnawing cold which both beautifully compliment the constant, edge of your seat anticipation for disaster. Howling winds and storms will make you rethink the severity of our Chicago winters and cause you to reconsider braving the elements without hat and gloves. Shots of mountains and glaciers seem to be directly from National Geographic with high altitude air that nearly causes shortness of breath. Especially in 3D.

Yet the magnificence of the landscape is rivaled by the magnificence of the human spirit when pushed to its greatest limits begging the question; is the only reason for playing with death in such a grandiose fashion simply because you can? A promising appetizer for the fall movie season and one heck of a snowball to the face.

I give Everest 3/4 stars.
