The Naperville Police Department is teaming up with the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and law enforcement agencies nationwide in collecting expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications on Sat., Sept. 26, 2015.

From 10AM to 2PM, you can bring the above mentioned medications to the front lobby of the police department, 1350 Aurora Ave., and turn them in for safe disposal, no questions asked.

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

“In recent years, one of the Police Department major initiatives has been to curb the abuse of drugs, including prescription drugs, in the community,” said Naperville Police Chief Robert Marshall. “Often, prescription medications act as gateway drugs to other forms of drug abuse. This program gives residents a great opportunity to rid their homes of these potentially dangerous drugs and learn more about the risk of abuse.”

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are at alarming rates, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that many abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicine, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away – both potential safety and health hazards.

Bring in your expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs to the Naperville Police Department for proper disposal on Sat., Sept. 26.

Be advised police will not accept sharps or needles of any kind. Officers will be there to assist you and answer your questions.

Prescription drug drop boxes also are available for residents to safely and anonymously dispose of prescription medications in all 10 of Naperville’s fire stations on a 24-hour, seven days a week basis.
