This month I’m setting aside the drill and floss for something almost as important…having fun. Labor Day weekend this year is the 50th anniversary of one of the best events in Naperville, the Naperville Jaycees Last Fling.
I’ve been involved with the Jaycees and the Fling for more than 25 years. My daughters grew up going to the Fling. They’ve always looked forward to it, sometimes more than I do!
I remember standing in line with them for the carnival rides, moving up through the years from teacups to wild spinning beasts that test your limits after a long Friday night. But it was time well spent. They still talk about it. And that was way before the elaborate Kiddyland that the Jaycees have put together.
I’m always finding new things at the Fling and learning about special attractions that I never realized were so popular. For instance, there’s the apple pie baking contest that I’ve judged the last few years or listening to local bands and local talent at the entertainment stage. There’s a sand volleyball tournament, soccer shoot-out, wine tasting, Sam Adams tasting, senior bingo, Frisbee dog competition…. all in addition to the big bands on the Main Stage in front of the green grass of Rotary Hill. The Fling has something for everyone.
This year the Fling has two new races, the Rooster 5K and the Challenge. They will debut alongside the very popular Fling Mile. Runners will take off before the Labor Day Parade on Mon., Sept. 7, and it should be fun to watch, even if you decide not to participate.
