Each summer, hundreds of students return home to Naperville from colleges and universities across America. While a little R&R and a home-cooked meal are often high on their priority list, most are also in need of a job to offset the high cost of tuition or an internship to better prepare them for a job after graduation.
And, no surprise, finding internships is also becoming increasingly popular among high school students as they look to ‘test drive’ potential career options before committing to a major in college.
At NCTV17 we understand the importance of becoming college and career-ready so we’ve offered internships at both the high school and college level for years as part of our commitment to help train the next generation of broadcast professionals.
This summer Sheila Reilly, a graduate of Naperville Central and current Indiana University student, is interning with our News Department in preparation for becoming a multi-media journalist. Four high school students from School Districts 203 and 204 are participating in an eight week internship program where they are receiving hands-on training from a cross-section of staff in all aspects of station operations.
As part of this program, former employees who started with NCTV17 as interns are coming back to the station to offer up some real-life tips on how to navigate the world of media. Sharing their experiences will be Will Armistead who now works for Banner Collective producing video content for the Chicago Blackhawks and Jen Hannon, who is a Media Specialist for Naperville School District 203. Also stopping by to give some lessons in audio technology will be Ben Wiersum, sound engineer and local business owner. Each of these former NCTV17 interns is paying it forward by sharing their insights and knowledge with the intern Class of 2015.
All of us at NCTV17 are excited to see how our interns grow and develop over the summer because we believe, “A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
