National Night Out Takes Place Tuesday, August 4; Event Registration Due July 20
Neighborhoods throughout Naperville are invited to join communities nationwide and participate in the City’s 20th annual National Night Out event from 6 to 9PM on Tuesday, August 4, 2015.
Neighborhoods are asked to register their National Night Out events with the City of Naperville by Monday, July 20. To register, please contact Crime Prevention Specialist Julie Smith at (630) 305-5450 or smithju@naperville.il.us and request a registration form. An informational packet is available on the City’s website at www.naperville.il.us/nno.aspx for those neighborhoods or associations wanting to know more about the event.
According to Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico, National Night Out is an opportunity for neighborhoods to strengthen their bonds in a concerted effort to keep our city safe.
“Without the level of awareness and neighborly compassion displayed by Naperville residents not just on National Night Out but every day,” Chirico notes, “We wouldn’t consistently be cited as one of the safest cities in which to live in the United States. This is one of the many reasons I have always lived here and now consider it my privilege to serve as Mayor.”
National Night Out is commonly called “America’s Night Out Against Crime.” This nationwide event is designed to heighten drug prevention and crime awareness, generate support and participation in local anti-crime efforts and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnerships.
In 2014, more than 35 Naperville neighborhoods participated.
Members from the Naperville Police, Naperville Fire, Public Works, Animal Control, Electric and Water Utility departments along with the Naperville Park District Police will visit many of the registered events.
Above / Throughout the year, the Naperville Police Department schedules educational tours of the Public Safety Center. During National Night Out, arrangements for first responders to come to local neighborhoods can be reserved if registered in time.
Previous Naperville neighborhood events have included block parties, parades, ice cream socials and more. Large events or small, there is no wrong way to take part in National Night Out.
Donation Drive
Each year, the City of Naperville selects an issue affecting our community to be highlighted on National Night Out with continued focus throughout the year. This year’s focus is drug awareness and abuse prevention.
The City has partnered with The Power of Choice, a collaborative project led by 360 Youth Services. The Power of Choice is a primary substance abuse prevention program focused on growing the number of youth who make healthy choices about alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. 360 Youth Services provides life changing services through prevention education, counseling and shelter.
Donations are needed to sustain these programs. The City of Naperville is encouraging National Night Out neighborhoods to hold a donation drive at their event to help support this cause.
