June Editor’s Notes

-

With the longest day of the year marking the first day of summer on June 21, our head is spinning with songs and the onset of activities for the great outdoors.

“June is busting out all over! When you’re down and out, lift up your head and shout, it’s going to be a great day.”

Our city loves its parades, rain or shine, and outdoor events when it’s dry!

With more daylight hours in June than any other month, it’s no wonder our city hosts an abundance of walks, runs, bike rides, Municipal Band Concerts in Central Park, Naper Nights at Naper Settlement, charity golf outings, baseball games, tennis matches—you name it.

With so many opportunities, everybody can find someplace to be. Yet, nobody can be every place. The good old summertime is for good choices.

Our June issue is focused on summer activities with a reminder about summer safety.

“Thunder is good, thunder is impressive, but it is lightning that does the work,” and so it goes according to Mark Twain. His words remind of us of the value when lightning transfers nitrogen to the soil, but also to take precautions and inform youngsters to heed the warnings of thunder before lightning strikes.

Whether it’s swimming at Centennial Beach or a neighborhood pool, hiking through the woods in Knoch Knolls, strolling the Riverwalk, riding a bike or playing in the parks, outdoors offers something for everyone, no matter how young or old.

Talk with youngsters about the buddy system, sun protection, insect repellent, swimming, poison ivy, taking breaks in the shade and remembering to drink fluids. You might be surprised what safety tips you learn from each other!

Take time to curl up under a shade tree and read books. Studies are finding that reading physical books in print is great for comprehension and better memories. Encourage youngsters to write a hand-written letter—even a postcard— to a friend or relative.

We just received a call from a good neighbor who reminded us to smile more. Pay someone a compliment. Look on the bright side with an attitude of gratitude.

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy… Sing along now…

Fish are jumpin’ in the Paddleboat Quarry, May Watts Pond and Lake Osborne, so grab a fishing pole, some bait and enjoy a little catch and release.

We are blessed to live in one of the safest cities in the country. And as McGruff the Crime Dog says, “Keeping our community safe is everyone’s responsibility.”

As always, thanks for reading PN in print every month and digitally daily.

Enjoy a safe and healthful summer.
