Pet Words of Wisdom – Spring to keep pets healthy

-

May is here! Long walks with the dog, long times out in the yard, time to clean the pond and put in the plants and maybe even restock some fish.

Warm weather is a welcome thing in Naperville!

The canine influenza crisis thing is real. We have been fortunate at Dog Patch to keep out of the line of fire, but the reality is that animals have died from this disease. We have been recommending that people keep their dogs out of dog parks and away from face to face greetings until the storm has really blown over. I am always more than a bit concerned when I overhear people say that this is just media hype. It is not. Dogs (and cats) that have weakened immune systems are at risk.

While the vaccine does not address the specific strain of flu, it provides protection for most and can help all dogs stay strong in defense of the flu.

It is time to start flea and tick medication. Prevention is key.

Speaking of prevention, heart worm season is here. Please, please give your dog heart worm medication!

Prevention is key to heart worm. The cost of prevention is a tiny fraction of the cost of treatment should your pet actually get heart worm. Please spend the money to prevent heart worm!!!

With a little common sense, you can have a healthy happy summer!
