Real News – Poolside Perspectives

-

decruiff_webFor me, the beginning of another year signals the start of the Commercial Real Estate Conference season. So I pack my bags and head off to connect with some of my professional colleagues, clients and friends. It’s a time when the Commercial Real Estate industry stops to reflect on the past year, learn about what is new, and plan for the year ahead. Or as some in my house call it, “a boondoggle to warm destinations.”

Now, I have never protested against going to Florida, California, nor Arizona in January and February, after all, I had nothing to do with planning of any of these conferences. Nor do I protest when clients meet pool or ocean side while at these conferences, many wonderful and inspirational conversations have taken place over the years while immersed in the local surroundings.

In reality, most of the conference sessions are very dry and technical, but for anyone who invests in Commercial Real Estate knows, you must keep ahead of the trends.

Now I already have one major Multi-family conference checked off the list. The take away so far this conference season is that the U.S. is still the safest place to invest in real estate. And we should see a lot more overseas capital coming here in the near future.

What does that all mean? Well, the laws of supply and demand will drive up prices on well-located commercial real estate. And even with modest job growth, most of the U.S. is poised to outperform the top other economies of the world for the next 24 months.

Walkable cities and towns with a transit orientation will see the most expansion overall. In general, these are some of the reasons Naperville will be an attractive commercial real estate investment opportunity in 2015 for investors.

And while my family is often stuck, I mean, enjoying all the cold and snow of the Midwest while I am away, I do share some of the less technical highlights of each conference upon my return – even as they might roll their eyes in envy, I mean, show their love and support of my life’s passion.

And after that, on to the next conference!
