Although they may be reluctant to admit it, many people fake things. Being curious, one may ask: do they fake for the sake of faking or are there other reasons for the faux?
Research would indicate that the motivation for imitation is spawned by many different objectives. The Seattle Seahawks executed a fake field goal to secure a win against the Green Bay Packers; Clint Eastwood cast a fake baby in the role of an infant in his current film “American Sniper” to cut production time; and lab-grown “cultured” diamonds that duplicate the properties of earth-mined diamonds are sold at a fraction of the cost.
Naperville Art League members found another incentive for simulation: they accepted the challenge to recreate a recognized work of art in order to participate in one of the organization’s most popular events, the annual “Fabulous Fakes” exhibit. Participating artists are encouraged to add their own twist to their ersatz art so that the viewer can be exposed to a sly commentary or perhaps a little humor. Many delightful entries comprised last year’s show including one where
Jonathan Toews and the Stanley Cup could be seen inside a café, thus turning Edward Hopper’s iconic “Nighthawks” into “Blackhawks.” Another submission presented Rembrandt’s “Night Watch,” which took on a different look when the members of the city guard were replaced with characters from the Doctor Who television series.
The 2015 “Fabulous Fakes” exhibit promises to carry on the tradition of creativity and fun. The public is invited to examine and enjoy the entries and test their observation skills and knowledge of art.
