DuPage Children’s Museum is closed, likely until April, because of flood damage in early January.

Naper Settlement and the DuPage Children’s Museum are presenting a day of play during “Naperville Plays,” a drop-in program for all ages, from 12:30 to 4PM on Saturday, Jan. 24 at the 95th Street Library, 3015 Cedar Glade Road, Naperville.

The location has been changed because of clean-up efforts underway due to extensive water damage at the DuPage Children’s Museum. Admission is free.

Discover the wonder of play and innovation with activities including:

  • Build It Big Engineering
  • Magnatile Science
  • Thaumatropes: Optical Motion Toys
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Pioneer Fun: Toys and Games
  • Make your own recycled newspaper
  • Shadow and hand puppet performances
  • Hand Sewing
  • Chicago music favorite Carol Weston takes children through the American Song Bag. Everyone participates as we sing and swing through traditional children’s favorites, songs from Appalachia, colonial times, and Broadway show tunes. The performance starts at 1PM.

Going forward through April, Naper Settlement offers free admission for DCM members

After Naperville Plays and through the month of April—while the DuPage Children’s Museum is closed because of clean-up efforts underway due to extensive water damage—Naper Settlement is offering free admission to DuPage Children’s Museum members.

“The DuPage Children’s Museum is an important partner of ours and we want to support them in whatever way we can,” said Naper Settlement President and CEO Rena Tamayo-Calabrese. “DCM is part of the museum family, our family. Situations like these are the time when we must show solidarity and work together.”

“The wonderful local business community, including our special partners at Naper Settlement, has so generously donated services and special offers to support the Museum at this time. We appreciate this amazing offer being extended to Museum members. In addition to Naper Settlement’s offer, a complete list of special offers can be found on our website. We are also pleased to report that Museum’s off-site programs are still very active in the community and they include: Learning Labs, Play to Learn, Family Math or Science Nights, and Professional Development,” said Sarah Orleans, DuPage Children’s Museum President & CEO.

Naper Settlement’s hours of operation are from 10AM to 4PM Monday through Friday through March 31 and is closed on the weekends. The summer season begins April 1 and the hours are 10AM to 4PM Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 4PM on Sunday. Free parking is available at the Settlement’s lot located at Webster Street and Porter Avenue. There is also parking available on Webster Street. There are plenty of spaces available in downtown Naperville, which are shown on this map: http://www.naperville.il.us/downtownparking.aspx.

Enter Naper Settlement via the PreEmption House. Hours are from 10AM to 4PM Monday through Friday through March 31. For now, the outdoor history museum is closed weekends.

The Pre-Emption House Visitor Center at 523 S. Webster St. has The History Connection, where children and families can learn about the past through play. The History Connection includes a pint-sized kitchen, Lincoln Logs, reproduction nineteenth century dress-up clothes, wooden blocks, puzzles, old-fashioned school desks and more.

Kids can write on the chalkboard walls in the Play with History exhibit that has games from the past to the present and includes board games, manipulatives for toddlers, blocks, hobby horses, hula hoops, puzzles, a magnetic fishing pole game, a toy timeline and exhibit cases that highlight some of the toys donated to Naper Settlement from Naperville families through the years.

The 3,500-square-foot “Brushstrokes of the Past: Naperville’s Story” interactive exhibit in the lower level of the Visitor Center showcases Naperville’s history from its founding in 1831 to the turn of the 20th century through the artwork of Naperville artist Les Schrader. The lower level classroom will be turned into an art center with crayons and coloring sheets for children to use to create their own works of art. During the winter months, the other historic buildings are in use for School Services Programs and are not open for general admission visitation.

Tamayo-Calabrese added, “We are honored to be able to offer free admission to their members. In the future, we will look for ways to expand our collaboration and continue to make the children in our community our priority.”
