With the flip of a switch (plus 20 miles of cable, LED lights and the help of 16 technicians, designers and programmers), a dismal landscape will transform into a dazzling display of light and wonderment this month at the Morton Arboretum.
Debuting in 2013, the interactive light-centric event “Illuminations” returns and fills the arboretum with audio-visual amazement. Vibrant lights in colors of pinks, blues and greens flow through the grounds in a choreographed dance. Specialized technical elements give visitors the ability to change the landscape with the wave of a hand or the tone of their voice. A vivid light show synchronized to the classical music of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra added this year contributes to the sensory indulgence.
Warming stations along the 1-mile trail off er a respite from the chill of winter, and concession stands stocked with burgers, s’more kits, coffee and cordials provide an extra burst of inner heat.
So, if you are ready for an adventure, grab your warm parka and a pair of gloves and experience the darkness as you have never before. With all this beauty, you just may begin to see the end of autumn in a different light.
