Football Week 5 Preview: Benet at Marist

-

Football-week-5Benet (4-0, 2-0 East Suburban Catholic) @ Marist (1-3, 0-2 East Suburban Catholic), 7:30PM Friday, Sept 26.

Last week: Benet beat St. Patrick, 28-7; Marist lost to Notre Dame, 20-18

Storyline: Off to a second straight 4-0 start, Benet will be looking to keep its momentum going in the city of Chicago against a Marist program that’s uncharacteristically struggling.

The Redwings, on the other hand, are thriving as they continue to put their 0-4 finish after a 6-0 start to 2013 behind them.

Behind the likes of middle linebacker Charlie Weidenbach and senior defensive back Mac Cooney, the Redwings’ defense has been particularly stingy in the season’s early going in allowing a combined 17 points in the last three weeks.

Cooney’s pick-six last week turned the tide in a 7-7 game with St. Patrick that eventually ended in a 21-point victory for the Redwings.

Meanwhile, senior running back Brad Sznajder continues to roll for Benet’s offense against the Shamrocks in tallying 87 yards and his eighth TD run of the season while his younger brother, Jack Sznajder, threw a pair of touchdown passes as the sophomore continues to get better and better.

Last week, the RedHawks lost on a field goal in the waning seconds of their game with Notre Dame as they dropped their third straight game of the season.

Marist QB Brendan Skalitzky found seven different receivers amidst throwing for 256 yards while Micah Awodiran ran for 111 yards and two TDs.

Benet coach Pat New on Marist: “Yeah, I am (surprised they’re 1-3). I mean, they’re a great program. … That 1-3 is really deceiving because they’re a well-coached team and they always have talent. We had a really bad experience (a 49-21 loss at Marist) last year that we’re trying to erase.

“The loss of (TE Nic Weishar to graduation and WR Flynn Nagel to a transfer) obviously really hurt them because those guys were spectacular football players and I think Nic Weishar is going to play in the NFL someday and then Flynn Nagel was just one of the fastest kids we’ve ever faced. So the loss of those two certainly hurt. … They’ve got a nice running back (Awodiran) and they always execute well and they’re well-coached.”
