The City of Naperville is currently accepting applications from the public for volunteers to serve on the City’s newly created Senior Task Force. This group will promote coordination among existing senior service providers in the Naperville area; improve awareness among seniors of available resources to assist them; and develop recommendations to address service gaps related to transportation challenges, housing concerns and healthcare resources.

An application is available to download at www.naperville.il.us/seniortaskforce.aspx. All applications and an accompanying resume are due to Emy Trotz in the Mayor’s Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, September 26, 2014. Applications and resumes can be submitted via mail to Mayor A. George Pradel, Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St., Naperville, IL 60540; by email to trotze@naperville.il.us; or in-person to the Mayor’s Office on the second floor of the Municipal Center.

What a Senior Task Force could be…

Seven volunteers will be appointed to serve on the task force for a minimum commitment of one year. The final term duration is yet to be determined.

Eligible applicants must be able to provide an independent perspective and may not be currently employed by or otherwise directly affiliated with a non-profit or other agency that provides senior services.

The task force meeting schedule will be determined once the members have been selected. Interested participants should anticipate spending time outside of regularly scheduled meetings assisting the task force with activities such as conducting research, meeting with senior service providers, making phone calls, participating in subcommittee discussions and focus groups, providing recommendations and creating future implementation plans.

The Senior Task Force, which is being established at the direction of the City Council, will help address the unique needs of Naperville’s growing senior population. As of the most recent census in 2010, more than 12,000 Naperville residents were over the age of 65, which accounts for almost 9 percent of the City’s population.

To ensure seniors’ needs are being met, the task force will work with service providers to promote efficiencies, grow awareness of assistance available to seniors and promote new partnerships that address local needs. The group will also proactively reach out to seniors for their thoughts and ideas via interviews, workshops, focus groups and surveys. Regular reports will be issued to the Mayor and City Council on the task force’s findings.
