UPDATE, July 15, 2015 / Anna Payton recently celebrated her first anniversary as the executive director of the Naperville Area Humane Society (NAHS). Payton came to NAHS in May of 2014 from the Kendall County Animal Control, where she served as director.

Payton started in the middle of the kennel renovation when the development director was on maternity leave, and the organization’s annual golf outing was scheduled in July.

Under Payton’s leadership, NAHS has completed the much-needed kennel renovation and has also purchased the neighboring property, which is now being converted into additional parking and will provide space for dog exercise areas to be built in the future.

In addition, NAHS has forged new partnerships with community businesses and organizations and expanded its weekend adoption hours.

For more information about NAHS and its educational programs, visit  www.NapervilleAreaHumaneSociety.org, or call (630) 420-8989.

The 2015 annual golf outing, Putts for Pets, is slated for July 27 at Bolingbrook Golf Club.

The NAHS shelter is located at 1620 W. Diehl Road.

Original Post, July 8, 2014 / The Naperville Area Humane Society (NAHS) invites the community to participate in its renovation celebrations during one of two grand opening events scheduled in July at the NAHS shelter.

The Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce will be on hand to hold an official ribbon cutting at 4PM on Wed., July 23, 2014.

A public Open House is scheduled from noon to 3PM on Sat., July 26, 2014. All are welcome to stop in and tour the newly renovated shelter.  A retro 80s themed party is planned to honor the era of the original building.

Refreshments and a raffle will be part of the festivities.

During both events, staff will be on hand to answer questions about the new improvements, upcoming programs or pet-related queries.  Pet adoptions also will be held.

Thanks to the generous support of donors and local sponsors, NAHS has updated its aging facility to create a more secure haven for animals in need.  Design improvements focused not only on the pets’ needs, but were also developed to create a more energy efficient building.  Being energy efficient will help reduce costs which in turn will help save more homeless animals.

Originally built in 1988, many of the building’s features had started to show wear.  Chipped paint, outdated chain link fencing and crumbling cinderblock created potential hazards.  New state-of-the-art dog kennels were installed to create a safer environment and improve the viewing and interaction with potential adopters.  Epoxy flooring laid throughout the shelter is easier to clean and helps aid in disease control.

Insulated windows replaced old glass block providing for enhanced lighting, improved circulation and ability to allow fresh air into the shelter.

New eco-friendly lighting, fresh paint, and a new counter top give the reception area a cheerful fresh look, one that reflects the joyful happenings that occur within the walls.

A flat screen monitor not only keeps visitors up-to-date on shelter news, events and adoptions but will be utilized as an interactive element with the many educational programs held with school age children.

An updated fire and security system also was installed.
