When my oldest daughter started school I remember the anticipation I felt as she began her “formal” education. What subjects would she like? What would she get involved in? What talents would she discover?

That first year her school put on a show. I grabbed my camera and arrived early for a good seat. When my daughter appeared on stage, she took one look at all the faces staring at her and immediately ran off . Alex spent the next 12 years running around a track or on a soccer field; anywhere but on stage.

But with time running out, Alex took the theatre plunge once more during her senior year. With no musical talent but a gift for gab, she signed up to emcee her school’s Variety Show. As I sat in the auditorium that day I was blown away by the incredible talent that took the stage (and I’m not referring to Alex!) The performance of the singers, dancers and musicians was both mesmerizing and inspiring. In that moment, I realized how oblivious I had been to so many of the wonderful things happening within the high school, simply because my child wasn’t involved.

NCTV17 doesn’t want you to have that same experience, which is why our Community Events programming includes coverage and rebroadcast of many high school Fine Arts performances. Viewers have enjoyed the talents of Neuqua’s Jazz Band, Central’s Steel Pan, Metea’s Orchestra, North’s Vocal Pop Choir and Waubonsie’s Orchesis this year alone.

So, even if your family is like mine and has absolutely no musical talent, tune in to NCTV17 and watch what our community’s aspiring singers, dancers, and musicians can do. I promise you’ll be entertained.

Who knows, maybe you’ll see the fi rst televised performance of the next Bruno Mars or Carrie Underwood or Derrick Hough or Yo-Yo Ma!
