It’s finally summer! Lots of things are on our animal checklist for the summer. Let’s take a quick review.

Flea and tick preventative. Critters crawling around on your dog is no fun for anyone. Don’t want to have to flea bomb the house, so treat the dog with some Frontline or maybe something more natural like Wondercide.

Don’t forget the cat. Some folks have a dog and a cat, but only treat the dog. If one has fleas they all have fleas. Treat the cat, too.

Heartworm treatments. Yes, they are expensive but nothing compared to the cost of treating Heartworms if found in the dog. Don’t mess around. Just use the preventative and move on.

Heat and water. Remember, just like us you, dogs drink more in warm weather. Always keep fresh water available for your pets. Be aware of how your buddy reacts to the heat. Don’t push them beyond their capabilities. I can’t believe that I must make this reminder. Never leave your pet in a hot car. It will kill them much quicker than you can imagine. Seriously, DON’T DO IT.

If you’re boating with your dog, it’s a good idea to get your furry friend a life vest. Many a dog’s life has been saved with a simple life vest. Dogs tend to burn more calories during the summer, so watch your dog’s weight. You may need to boost their food intake.

Enjoy outdoors. OK. Besides all of these issues, get outside and enjoy your dogs. Take long hikes at the forest preserve. Spend time at the dog park or allow dogs to run like crazy in your yard. Break out the Frisbee or a good ball and go for it!

Visit Dog Patch! Lots of adoptable dogs will come through our store all summer, so take a minute and make a new friend. We’d love to have you visit. And don’t forget to feed the wild birds. We have a great selection of nutritious seed and feed for feathered friends, too!

Dog Patch Pet & Feed is located at 1108 East Ogden Avenue in Naperville.
