Art Talk – The best of the best of the best

-

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, you discover the “Best of the Best” exhibit and competition at Wheaton’s Burning Bush Gallery.

venezia_webHosted by the Alliance of Fine Art (AFA), a membership-based coalition of Illinois art organizations, the 2014 show comprises approximately 50 original award-winning art pieces from 13 local art groups including Naperville Art League and Elmhurst Artists’ Guild. Pastel, oil, collage, found objects and other media are represented in a display of 2-D, 3-D and assemblage. Styles range from realism to abstract.

As a prerequisite, all pieces on display must have previously received an award from their home art organization. From this collection, associate professor Randy Vick from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago will select the best of show as well as placement and merit awards.

Also featured in this show is the artwork of the winning students from the AFA’s annual High School Art Scholarship competition. This year, the board of the AFA selected two students to receive acknowledgement for their eff orts: Colette Kocek, a junior from Lyons Township High School for her self-portrait in pencil and Allison Quinn, a junior from Downer Grove South for her charcoal piece titled “Behind the Scenes.” Both students will be honored at the awards ceremony on Thursday, June 5 when they will be given a check for $500 to further their arts education.

The show is open to the public and free of charge beginning Sun., May 18, through Sun., June 8. An Award Reception is from 6:30-8:30PM Thurs., June 5.
