June Editor’s Notes

-

For nearly 13 years, this monthly publication has been previewing upcoming events instead of reviewing what’s already happened.

In other words, PN leaves “covering the news” to the daily newspapers.

Our aim has been to engage residents in the generous heart of local culture by highlighting traditions, parades, events, the arts and our city’s rich history—all that’s celebrated as the contagious “Naperville spirit.”

We try hard to keep up in this competitive, always developing market.

Still, some things haven’t changed.

Our residents love the outdoor summer concert season!

Our much-appreciated advertising sponsors are independently-owned enterprises that welcome your inquires and your business.

Our contributing columnists bring unique perspectives and experiences to our pages.

Our stories are mostly briefs. Our website complements our printed pages with more photos and events than ever.

As our city has grown, so have the opportunities. Volunteerism continues to connect residents working toward common goals, always learning and gaining from the experience while creating a better city.

The other day, an e-mail arrived from one of PN’s original eight business sponsors, Sue Wehrli. The founder of Wehrli Travel 34 years ago now lives “in peace and quiet” on a lake in Wisconsin.

Sue and I met 20 years ago when we both volunteered on what was then the Naperville Visitors Bureau, now the NCVB. Sue still finds time for plenty of volunteer work, serving on four boards up North. With her sights on worldly travel destinations, she recently won another award for sales.

“I’ve been meaning to send you a note for a while,” Sue wrote, “You are doing a terrific job with Positively Naperville! I try to read it as often as possible and always find lots that still interests me, even though I am not ‘a native’ now. I really love your publication.”

The point is, you’ll meet some of Naperville’s most interesting people, past and present, when you volunteer.

Reminiscing with longtime friends is a joy. Testing memories from shared experiences is good for the soul. Take time this summer to be creative and enjoy outdoor activities. And remember to take volunteer spirit wherever you go.
