North Central College welcomes members of the community to its annual Cornerstone Day Picnic from 11AM to 1:30PM Friday, May 16, at the College’s Bambule Riverwalk Gateway between Fredenhagen Park and the north end of Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium. The free event features sample cuisine provided by many of Naperville’s fine restaurants with entertainment by North Central students. Adult Fishing Derby – 7AM | $10
Whalon Lake – 1490 Royce Road Naperville, IL 60565
The Forest Preserve District of Will County will host an ‘Adult Fishing Derby’ from 7AM to 1PM on Saturday, May 17, at Whalon Lake Lakeside Shelter, 1490 Royce Road, Naperville. The shoreline derby is for anglers 16 and older. Prizes valued at hundreds of dollars will be awarded for the most panfish, biggest bass and biggest catfish. Same-day registration is from 7 to 8AM. Fishing is from 8AM to noon. Prizes will be awarded as soon as results are tallied. The first 25 registrants will receive a free giveaway. Register in advance by calling (708) 534-8499. Shoreline fishing and sidewalks are easily accessible for all participants.

Naperville Homeowners to Take Care of Business at May Meeting – 8AM

May 17 marks the Naperville Area Homeowners Confederation’s Annual Membership Meeting. Every year the May meeting is the time to elect officers and directors, report to the membership on the activities and state of the organization, and take time for the members to have open discussion around community issues, problems and Confederation direction for the upcoming year. Beyond elections for a new Confederation Secretary, Treasurer, and two At-Large Directors, representatives from area law firm Keough & Moody will be on hand to provide an update on laws related to Homeowner and Condominium Associations. With the legislature wrapping up the Spring Session at the end of May, there are several interesting pieces of legislation which could have a major impact on area associations and how they are governed, and managed. A representative of the 2014 Edward Hospital Naperville Marathon & Half Marathon will also be on hand to discuss this year’s events and ways neighbors and neighborhoods can get involved. The meeting will begin at 8AM in meeting rooms B&C of the Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle Street, at 8AM with coffee and networking sponsored by Keough & Moody, P.C. Civil War

Civil War Days – 10AM | $5-$15

During Civil War Days, Naper Settlement is transformed into a Civil War encampment where visitors can experience firsthand a turbulent time period in our nation’s history. Learn how the nation changed through the insights of famous people who made a difference in history. Hundreds of re-enactors participate, staging a battle with raging artillery and marching infantry at 2:30PM each day. Naperville Chorus Spring Concert – 8PM | $15-$20

The Naperville Chorus, under the direction of Jeordano Martinez, will present ‘Israel in Egypt’ by George Frideric Handel. Handel tells the story of the Israelites in Egypt and the plagues that are visited upon Egypt by God to convince the Egyptian Pharos to let the Israelites leave Egypt. HDSA Team Hope Walk – 9AM | $20

10th Annual Team Hope Walk for Huntington’s Disease, a walk to raise donations to help the Huntington’s Disease Society of America’s mission of Help for Today-Hope for Tomorrow. A family hot dog picnic and live music follows the completion of the Walk. $20 per participant.

Once on This Island Performance – 3:30PM | $10

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, JR., presented by The School of Performing Arts, performing at the Yellow Box Theatre, Community Christian Church May 18 at 3:30 and 6:30PM. With its poignant story and catchy Caribbean flavored score, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND JR. is a feast for the heart, mind, and soul and is a wonderful ensemble piece of Musical Theatre! The highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale The Little Mermaid garnered eight Tony nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book and Score.
