Art Talk – Art forgeries: fraud or fun?

-

venezia_webLast fall, a Manhattan art dealer was indicted on fraud charges for selling more than $30 million in forged artworks, allegedly created by Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and other renowned 20th century artists. These works, actually created by an immigrant from China residing in Queens, were good enough to fool the experts, at least for a while. Clearly, a crime was committed as the buyers were duped into believing they were purchasing original works from the masters.

But what would be the harm in seeing sublimely beautiful renditions of recognized works of art, knowing that the pieces were copies done by local artists? With no intent to deceive but rather to entertain, is there any wrongdoing?

Imagine as you look closely and find deviations from the original. Is that a laptop on the desk in Van Gogh’s bedroom? Watch as Christina enters a new world while she crawls across a field, not to reach that imposing gray farmhouse but rather a Starbucks. And look at that portrait, isn’t that Klimpt Eastwood?

If this sounds at all intriguing, then please make time to come to Naperville Art League’s Fabulous Fakes Exhibit, now open, at their Fine Art Center and Gallery, 508 N. Center St. The artwork, created by the members of the league, is sure to delight even the harshest of critics. Plan a visit: a remarkable blend of originality laced with levity and mystery awaits!

The public is invited to the Artists’ Reception from 2-4PM Sun., Feb. 9. Refreshments will be served.

Gallery hours are noon to 4PM Wed. through Fri. and from 10AM to 4PM Saturdays. Admission is free. For more info, call (630) 355-2530 or visit www.napervilleartleague. com.
