A year ago, when it was brought to our attention that February is National Wild Bird Feeding Month, we used this commentary to raise awareness about the proper and healthful way to feed our wild feathered friends. Plus, photographer Mike Krol had sent us an inspiring photo of Lake Osborne at sunrise with thousands of geese that created a memorable front cover. That’s also when we learned that a cardinal, the Illinois State Bird, weighs two ounces and the typical backyard bird that hangs out at feeders weighs less than nine nickels!
This year, again with good healthy eating still on our mind, our thoughts for February will focus on diners of the human type.
Naperville Restaurant Week
In light of the inaugural Naperville Restaurant Week, we’re dedicating this issue to our city’s culinary culture and what it means to our city’s coffers and our city’s traditions.
Here’s hoping that readers appreciate that our city’s restaurant industry is a thriving attraction that provides more than delicious dining to the folks it serves. We’re hoping our pages provide a few reasons why it’s important to get to know your local restaurant community and to recognize how their generosity makes a big difference in our quality of life.
With more than 260 restaurants nestled in destinations north, east, west and south, we aim to provide just a taste of what you can explore from Feb. 16 through March 3.
Bon Appetite!
Primary food for thought, too
Last month we launched our Election and Voter’s Guide and our web editor has been updating it frequently as candidates or their campaign committees have been requesting that we link our listings to their websites.
The Gubernatorial Primary Election is Tues., March 18.
Again this year, we welcome hopefuls to let us know when they’re hosting “meet and greets” and fundraisers that are open to the public. Our aim always is to educate voters. Oh! How we wish our local electorate would meet personally as many candidates as possible.
Visit our Voter’s Guide often as we’ll continue to post candidates’ forums geared toward the campaign, especially ones that will offer public Q&A. We’ve linked it right to the front of PN’s homepage at www.positivelynaperville.com.
Thanks for generous hearts all around
In addition to being the month for funny Valentines, chocolate in heart-shaped boxes, long-stemmed red roses and romantic dinners, February is American Heart Month, a time when many people schedule annual check-ups to be sure their hearts are in good shape.
February also is the month when many local organizations begin hosting annual charitable events that make a difference to the quality of life in our city. Consider the North Central College International Festival, Jaycees Mardi Gras and West Suburban Irish Emerald Dinner, to name three.
