There are times I am convinced that three types of people populate our community. The first group, and one unfortunately in the minority, is comprised of individuals “In the know.” These are the people that take the time to learn about and understand what is going on around them and then take action to become part of the solution.
The next group, thankfully in the minority, is made up of people who chronically complain and blame conspiracies for keeping critical information from them. They find it easier to find fault, particularly with members of the first group, than to search for facts and help constructively address situations.
Finally, the majority go about their daily lives happy with the status quo until something shakes them from their comfort zone. They then move into one of the first two groups.
I would like to believe that members of the Homeowners Confederation belong to the first group and that our meetings help them in their endeavors. In November, for example, we got a firsthand report from Springfield on pensions, learned where traffic problems were going to be and how they are being addressed, heard about a citizen effort to change the state constitution, and, during open forum, had an open and frank discussion on multiple topics among an audience that included city council members, key staffers, and a State Senator.
Coming up at 8:30AM on December 14 at the General Membership Meeting, (Meeting Rooms B&C, Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St.) with an emphasis on Public Utilities, we will hear from the people who keep the lights on and water flowing, both into and out of our homes. This is a great chance to learn what is coming, financially and functionally, and ask questions to stay in the know. Along with all of this there will also be “coffee and” to help take the edge off the Saturday morning.

Editor’s Note: The Naperville Area Homeowners Confederation meets September through June at 8:30AM on the third Saturday of the month, usually at the Naperville Municipal Center.
