Focus on Safety – Holiday safety tips

-

smith_julieThe holiday season is always a special time of year. It is also a time when busy people become careless and vulnerable to theft and other holiday crime. I know the hustle and bustle can often be overwhelming at times, but we can never be too careful, too prepared or too aware for potential crime. Here are a few holiday shopping safety tips to help keep you safe.

Let’s first start off talking about where to park. Park in a well-lit space closest to the entrance or exit. If this means driving up an additional level in the parking garage instead of walking across the length of the garage, you are better off.

Remain aware of your surroundings at all times and move to and from your vehicle with confidence and “purpose.” Have your keys ready before getting to your car so you don’t have to search for them while standing near it.

Also, remember where you parked! There is nothing worse than wandering the parking lot searching for your vehicle with a lost look on your face.

Don’t overload yourself with packages. Being overburdened may make it difficult to respond to a personal threat. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion. Put your shopping bags and gifts in the trunk of your vehicle, out of plain sight.

Avoid carrying large amounts of cash and keep credit cards that you never use at home. If you carry a purse, keep it close to your body, in front where it can be seen, and cover the clasp or flap with your hand. Your wallet should be kept in your front pants pocket or coat breast pocket.

Shopping with children? Teach them if they get separated from you, they should go to a store clerk or a security officer and say they are lost. Tell them NEVER to leave a store or go to the parking lot to look for you.

Lastly, be alert! Be aware of strangers approaching you for any reason. At this time of year, criminals try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.

Happy Holidays! Until next month… Stay Aware & Stay Safe.
