Real News – Nickels and dimes

-

As the temperature drops, and this year suddenly it seems to be dropping faster than normal, heating bills go up. And with shorter days in the fall and winter, the cost to keep the lights on also go up.

dekruiff_webWhat to do if you are a commercial property owner; ask your tenants to put on a sweater, read by candle light, and I am sure everyone can think of fun ways commercial property owners can save money on gas, electric and water. The real solutions to energy savings are a lot simpler and practical than you might imagine.

These savings come in two basic forms, consumption and conservation.

Consumption consists of buying energy (when it is allowed) like Gas and Electric from wholesalers. Conservation, on the other hand, consists of things like replacing light bulbs with newer efficient technology, installing high efficiency furnaces or heating systems, and adding low fl ow water devices to save on water, too.

“With each light fi xture replacement you may only save just a little, but when you add up the savings for each fixture, the annual savings creates real value for your building and tenants,” said Tina Persin of Genesis Energy, an energy consulting firm based in DuPage County that provides both conservation and procurement services in Naperville.

Again, nothing is really complicated about cutting these expenses, coupled with manufacture and federal tax rebates (when available). These nickels and dimes can add up to big bucks. All of which should warm the heart of most any commercial property owner, no matter how cold outside it gets.
